NERC: New Electricity Rates to Undergo Socio-economic, Political Assessment

  • Federal, States governments to be consulted on overall impacts
  •  As Discos propose sweeping increase in retail tariffs

The final outcome of an ongoing review of retail electricity rates to be charged by electricity distribution companies (Discos) in the Nigerian electricity market would be presented to the Federal and State governments to assess the socio-economic implications of any increase or otherwise on Nigerians and businesses in the country, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said on Tuesday.

Indicating that both the Presidency and State Governors would have the opportunity to study the final outcome of the electricity tariff review, NERC explained that it would not be seeking an approval of the tariff from the political class as such, but only consulting it to perhaps come up with potential policy responses to mitigate the impacts.

It noted that policy responses such as subsidy for certain groups of consumers, as well as, management of the impacts of security challenges on the cost of distributing electricity in the north east are some of what would be expected from their eventual review of the tariff.
