I Plotted My Boss’ Kidnap Because She Maltreated Me – Driver (Photo)

A suspected kidnapper, Solomon Michael, who was paraded alongside four others at the Lagos State Police command, Ikeja, has confessed that he plotted the kidnap of his boss because she maltreated him.
The suspect, who was paraded alongside Ibrahim Sozza, Thankgod Husseni, Paul Brutus and Suleiman Mohammed, for allegedly robbing and kidnapping one Alhaja Modupe Idris, a business tycoon in Idumota and her sister, Alhaja Risikat Laminu, said: “I plotted to rob and kidnap my boss because she was maltreating me.
It was one Emmanuel who organised four others that assisted me in carrying out the robbery and kidnapping. After the operation, Emmanuel and his gang gave me the Toyota SUV, smart phone and one I-pad as my share of the loot.
“Immediately I collected it, Ibrahim and I travelled to Jos, Plateau State to meet Thankgod Husseni, who we earlier told about the operation.
It was Husseni that helped us sell our loot. He sold the SUV to one Brutus for N400, 000.”
It was learned that sometime in September, 2015, Solomon arranged the kidnap of Alhaja Idris, who employed him as her driver.
He had worked for her for two years.
To perfect his plans, he connived with Emmanuel, a leader of an armed robbery gang, who is now at large to assist him kidnap Alhaja Modupe.
It was gathered that on September 30, Emma and his gang trailed Alhaja from her shop to Surulere area in Lagos, at 9:30p.m., where they hit her vehicle from the back feigning an accident.
Immediately her driver, Solomon stopped the vehicle to check the extent of damage the accident caused, the gang struck, robbed and kidnapped Alhaja Modupe, her sister, Alhaja Laminu and her house maid, who were inside a black Toyota SUV with number plate LSR871BM. They also collected N1.2 million, and other valuables from her before taking them to a bush somewhere at Ijebu-Ode area.
Briefing newsmen, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, said operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, were detailed to investigate the case after one Alhaji Wale Idris of Beyioku Eniyansoro Street, reported that his wife, Modupe Idris, sister-in-law Alhaja Laminu and maid were robbed and kidnapped.

Rivers University Expels Student For Having Speech And Hearing Challenges

Rivers-State-University-of-Science-and-Technology-rsust
The student opened the letter she was clutching in her hands and felt the walls around her crumble.
As Jane Ottah stood outside her departmental office at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, the reality of what she had just read began to gradually sink in.
“What I saw in the letter was the shock of my life,” said Ms. Ottah, 28, who was in her first year in the Department of Educational Foundation.
“This was a thing I will never believe, this was the one thing that could have taken away my life if it wasn’t for the help of my friends‎ who were there when I was about to faint.”
‎On January 30, 2015, the university terminated Ms. Ottah’s admission over claims of speech and hearing challenges.
“I am directed to state that during your recent medical examination in the Health Services Department, it was observed that you are medically challenged and have hearing and speech difficulties,” read the letter signed‎ by C.M Ewhorlu, Principal Assistant Registrar (Senate) of the university.
“I am further directed to state that as a result of these difficulties our team of medical personnel found it impossible to communicate with you.
“Since the University ‎does not have special communication facilities, the Vice-Chancellor has directed that you be de-registered on health grounds. I am in the circumstance, directed to inform you that you have been de-registered on health grounds with immediate effect.
“You are therefore advised to hand over all University property(ies) in your possession to your Head of Department and thereafter leave the campus.”
A ‘Special’ Student?
‎Despite the university’s claims that she was a special student, Ms. Ottah insisted she had no such challenges.
After initially applying to study Business Administration at the university, Ms. Ottah was offered an admission to read Educational Foundations in September 2014.
When the school reopened a month later, she joined other fresh students for the admission formalities, which included a medical check-up at the institution’s medical centre.
“As soon as I went there and I was asked what is wrong with my voice, I told the doctor that I have a voice problem, that I can talk but at times my voice is somehow,” Ms. Ottah told PREMIUM TIMES during a Whatsapp chat.
“I was not with my hearing aid the day I went there., and she (the doctor) didn’t understand me very well but the other younger doctor was there as well who was asking me questions about what happened to my voice and I decided to tell her about my hearing problem as well‎.
“And she asked me some questions like how did it happened and I told her. She seemed to understand me a bit but the elder doctor didn’t‎.
“And she asked about my eyes just because I was putting on glasses‎. And I told her that I do have eyes problem‎ and she checked my eyes and put it down on a book‎.
‎”And she asked me if I was sick as a kid because of my hearing loss. I told her no. It just happened in a way that one can’t tell.
“So she asked about my secondary school, if it was a deaf school. I told her no‎, it’s not a deaf school I went to‎‎.”
According to her West African Examination Council result made available to PREMIUM TIMES,‎ Ms. Ottah‎ finished from Hallel College in Rumuogba, Port Harcourt, with three distinctions and five credits.
At the university medical centre, Ms. Ottah said she overheard the doctors discussing the possibility of her coping with the academic rigours.
“From that day, nothing was bad. I was busy with assignment, project, test, and planning for my first semester exams in February,” she said.
The school went on Christmas break on December‎ 22, 2014, and resumed on January 5th, 2015.
Everything seemed fine for Ms. Ottah.
Until the first semester examination began.
“On the first paper, there was a paper that the lecturer will give you to sign if your name is there, and if you see your name on the list you have to sign there and I did mine,” she said.
Ms. Ottah said she signed against her name during her second and third‎ papers.
However, on the day of the fourth paper, trouble surfaced.
“I didn’t see my name on the list to sign and I was worried that I asked my course mate and she direct me to go to the ICT centre to check,” she said.
“I went there with two of my course mates and we were told that they couldn’t find my name on the list but my name was there and that they‎ couldn’t see the course I requested, and I was told it was from the medical centre. They blocked me from there.
“And I went with my course mate and met with the doctor, crying with a shaky voice which made her not to understand what I was talking about and I decided to call my friend to speak on my behalf. For example, I will talk to her and she will tell them what I am saying‎.
‎”As soon as we were done talking, the doctor said she once one told me that day I was in her office that I should come the other day but I didn’t. I was so busy that I forget about it. She sent me to my Department Office.”
It was at the Department Office that a lady delivered the letter which bore the shattering news to Ms. Ottah.
“‎In school, no one ever knew about my hearing problem, it was just my voice they knew,” she said.
Embarrassed dad
Benedict Ottah, her father, described the letter as a “serious embarrassment”.
“I drove to the school, met the HOD, unfortunately, she didn’t attend to me in a way that she should,” Mr. Ottah told PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone.
“And I put up a letter demanding her (his daughter’s) instant recall. They refused. All of a sudden the HOD sent me back to the Medical Board. Only to be informed by the Medical Board that I should write a letter to the VC.
“I later wrote a letter to the VC, copied the Medical Board, the HOD, and the registrar who wrote the letter.”
‎In his letter to the Vice Chancellor, Mr. Ottah appealed for his daughter’s re-registration, noting that she had been taking her lectures and doing her class assignments without stress or complaints.
“I wish to state that on 2nd March, 2015, in the office of the HOD of Technical and Science Educational Foundations, Jane Ihuoma Ottah demonstrated clearly to the witness of the HOD her hearing and responding ability different from what was stated in the above letter,” Mr. Ottah wrote in the letter dated 2nd March, 2015.
“This demonstratio‎n was made possible while she wore her hearing aids. The same demonstration repeated again when she was referred to meet the Medical Director, Medical Services on same 2nd March 2015 in the office of the Medical Director himself.
“However, Jane Ihuoma Ottah did not attend the medical observation with her hearing, ear-aids the day she was scheduled. Furthermore, I wish the Medical Services may conduct another examination that she should be allowed to use her hearing aids. I am optimistic that this report will be put to rest.”
‎About two weeks after he wrote to the university, Mr. Ottah said he returned to the school only to be told by the head of her daughter’s department that the letter was “infuriating to her”.
‎”I told her what transpired in her office was exactly what I communicated, and then you are blaming me. All of a sudden she demanded that I should leave her office. Honestly I was seriously embarrassed,” he said.
“Only to go back to the VC secretary, I was being turned up, come back today, come back tomorrow. I ended up ‎without no response up till date. They did not respond to my letter.
“The university has just denied her the opportunity to be in school. I know my daughter has a problem‎ but she had every opportunity up till today.”
When contacted by PREMIUM TIMES, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Blessing Didia, said he had never heard of Ms. Ottah’s case.
“The matter happened in January as you said. I came from the University of Port Harcourt to become VC here in August,” Mr. Didia, a professor of medicine said. “This is the first time I have heard about the case.”
When asked whether he would review the case now that he is aware, Mr. Didia said, “They don’t admit deaf and dumb here. And if what you said really happened, the vice chancellor then must have seen reasons why she could not be taught here.”
‎Efforts to reach the school’s Registrar were unsuccessful and an e-mail sent to the school’s official mail address was not replied.
Ms. Ottah said she had remained at home since her dismissal – weeping over her misfortune and praying – while her friends are now in 200 level in the school.
“I never thought that Rivers State University of Science can send me away like this,” she said.
“‎Discrimination needs to stop. Everyone has the right to be educated no matter the conditions one is facing.”
The International Ford Fellowships Alumni Association Nigeria (IFFPAN), which first brought the student’s ordeal to the attention of this newspaper, has condemned the action of the University.
Speaking through its president, Faruk Sarkinfada, a professor, it said, “It is regrettable that a University in Nigeria in the 21st century can discriminate against any citizen on account of her disability.
“Her right to Education has been breached. The aspect of her life that must be telling her she is not wanted in our society will unfortunately impact negatively on her whole being.
“The university should review its decision and reinstate her, so that she can acquire tertiary education like her contemporaries.”

Messi: Suarez deserved Ballon d'Or nomination

The Barca player was disappointed his team-mate didn't join him and Neymar among the three finalists for the Fifa prize
Lionel Messi believes Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez deserved to be named among the finalists for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The Argentina international was named as one of the three players up for the prestigious individual prize on Monday, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar the other two.

That meant there was no room for Suarez, the third member of Barca’s three-man attack.

Between them, they have scored 125 goals in 2015 so far, with the Uruguayan contributing 40 of them - including several important strikes as Barca clinched the treble last season.

“I’d have liked to be on Ballon d'Or podium with Ney and Luis,” Messi said at the La Liga awards ceremony on Monday night where he was named as the league’s best player for the 2014-15 campaign.

“Luis deserved it, but Cristiano did aswell - we'll have a good time [at the Fifa gala].”

In addition to his best player award, Messi also scooped the award for best forward in Spain’s top flight last season. Accepting his trophies, he said: “I’d like to dedicate this award to my son, Thiago.

“When I leave home, he always gets mad and says: ‘Are you going to the goal again?’ Yes, I tell him, I’m going to the goal!

“I am grateful for these awards - after the season the team played, we deserved some recognition, maybe even a little more…”

Neymar, who was named La Liga’s best American player for the last season, also added his disappointment at seeing Suarez miss out on the final three for the Ballon d’Or.

“Being nominated for the Ballon d'Or means a lot,” the Brazilian said.

“Suarez should have been there as well, though - but Messi is the favourite, he's the number one for me.”

Former Liverpool forward Suarez responded with grace as he watched his two strike partners pocket awards and nominations throughout the day on Monday.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Congratulations, friends!!!! Really proud of you. I’m really glad.”

Mohammad Abu Khdair murder: Two Israelis found guilty

Mohammed Abu Khdair
Mohammad Abu Khdair was abducted and murdered in Jerusalem
Two 17-year-old Israelis have been convicted of the murder of Palestinian youth Mohammad Abu Khdair, abducted and burned to death in Jerusalem in 2014.
A verdict on a third suspect, a 31-year-old Israeli man, was postponed for a mental health review.
Mohammad Abu Khdair, 16, was killed in apparent revenge for the murders of three Israeli teens in the West Bank.
The killings set off an escalating cycle of violence, leading to a war between Israel and militants in Gaza.

'No justice'

Mohammad Abu Khdair's body was found in a forest in West Jerusalem on 2 July 2014, two days after the bodies of three Israeli teenagers abducted and murdered by Hamas militants that June were found in the West Bank.
Israeli prosecutors said the two unnamed minors and 31-year-old Yosef Haim Ben David admitted during questioning to beating Abu Khdair unconscious and then burning him to death using petrol poured on the teenager while he was still alive.

On Monday, the panel of three judges at the Jerusalem District Court found the minors guilty of the murder.
They also said there was enough evidence to convict Mr Ben David, but that the verdict would be postponed until a psychiatric evaluation had been carried out.
On Thursday, Mr Ben David's lawyer submitted a psychiatric opinion which stated that he had not been responsible for his actions at the time of the murder.
Prosecutors had previously presented evidence they said showed Mr Ben David was responsible for his actions.
Abu Khdair's father, Hussein, said Mr Ben David was trying to mislead the court. "There is no justice," he was quoted as saying by Israel's Haaretz newspaper.
Two Palestinians suspected of the murder of the three Israeli teenagers - Naftali Fraenkel and Gilad Shaar, both aged 16, and 19-year-old Eyal Yifrach - were killed by Israeli forces in a gun-battle at their hideout in Hebron in September 2014.
A third man, Hussam Qawasmeh, was sentenced to three life terms in prison in January after being found guilty by an Israeli court of several charges including three counts of accessory to murder.

Pope Francis: 'Christians and Muslims are brothers'

Pope Francis (C) shakes the hands of children upon his arrival to the Central Mosque in the PK5 neighborhood on November 30, 2015 in Bangui
Pope Francis said Christians and Muslims should turn their back on revenge and hatred
Pope Francis has told worshippers in a mosque in the capital of the Central African Republic that "Christians and Muslims are brothers and sisters".
He was speaking to Muslims who had sought shelter in Bangui following nearly three years of violence between Christians and Muslims.
The mosque visit was seen as perhaps the most difficult part of his Africa tour, a BBC correspondent says
Pope Francis will conclude his trip to Africa with a final Mass in Bangui.
Most Muslims left the capital as a result of the fighting but 15,000 are left in an area called PK5, surrounded by armed Christian militia.

On Sunday, the Pope called on fighting factions in the CAR to lay down their weapons.
Celebrating Mass in Bangui, he said they should instead arm themselves "with justice, love, mercy and authentic peace".
Earlier, he said he hoped next month's election in the CAR would open a "new chapter" for the country.
CAR has been torn apart by violence between Muslim rebels and mainly Christian militias.
It is the pontiff's first visit to a conflict zone and the final stop on his landmark three-nation African tour.

Large crowds have greeted the Pope on his visit to Bangui
Acting President Catherine Samba-Panza has asked him for "forgiveness" for the country's recent religious violence.

'Temptation of fear'

Hundreds of people waited amid tight security but in a calm atmosphere ahead of the Pope's visit to the Koudoukou mosque in Bangui on Monday.
After meeting local Muslim leaders, Francis will address the crowd and is expected to continue his theme of religious reconciliation.
On Sunday, large crowds had lined the road from the airport to welcome the Pope - and people cheered and sang when he arrived at a refugee camp.
In an address at the presidential palace, he called for unity and to avoid "the temptation of fear of others, of the unfamiliar, of what is not part of our ethnic group, our political views or our religious confession".
Conflict has blighted the CAR for decades but it was only in 2013 tha the fighting took on a religious form.
President Francois Bozize was ousted in a coup in March 2013 and a group of mostly Muslim rebels from the north, the Seleka, marched on Bangui, briefly taking control of the country.
The Pope's African tour also took in Uganda and Kenya.

In Uganda, the Pope celebrated Mass in front of an audience of hundreds of thousands of people, and spoke at a Catholic shrine dedicated to Christians martyred for their faith in the 19th Century.
On Friday, the Pope addressed an audience of young people in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, urging them to unite and take a stand against the destructive effects of tribalism.

Their rebellion tapped into a feeling northerners had of being excluded and unrepresented by the central government, correspondents say.
They targeted churches and Christian communities, which triggered the creation of the anti-Balaka - meaning anti-violence - militias, and led to a downward spiral of tit-for-tat violence which continues.
Towns and villages are divided, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced into camps divided along religious lines.

  • Christian population is 517 million (63% of total)
  • Protestants make up more than half the number
  • Catholics make up about a third
  • Muslim population is 248 million (about 30% of total)
  • 1.1 billion Christians expected by 2050

Post titleJapan whaling ships to set sail for Antarctic on 1 December

Antarctic minke whale, at sea
Supporters argue that whaling opponents are simply trying to impose their own cultural norms on Japan
Japan has said that its Antarctic whaling fleet will sail on 1 December, despite a UN legal decision that its "research ships" are actually commercial hunts.
A statement on Japan's Fisheries Agency website said whaling will run from late December until March next year.
Japan stopped whaling for one year, but announced last week it would resume.
For years the activity has pitted Japan against activists who call it inhumane and unsustainable.
In 2014, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Japan's whaling programme did not qualify as scientific and should cease.
That season Japan sent whaling ships to the ocean, but, respecting the verdict, returned with no catch.

Smaller hunt, big opposition

The Japanese government says its new whaling programme takes into account that ICJ decision and is now much smaller.
The hunt will aim to capture 333 Antarctic minke whales, about one-third of what it used to kill.
It will also conduct non-lethal research, including sighting surveys and the collection of biopsy samples.
Four ships will be involved in the hunt, including the 8,000 tonne mother ship, the Nisshin Maru.

A minke whale on the deck of a Japanese whaling ship in the Antarctic Ocean A dead fin whale caught by an Icelandic whaler in 2013
Japan is one of several nations to practice whaling, including Iceland, where this fin whale was caught
Japan's earlier announcement that it would resume whaling was met with dismay by environmental activists and governments opposed to the hunt.
"We do not accept in any way, shape or form the concept of killing whales for so-called 'scientific research'," said Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt.
In 1982, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the global body that regulates whaling, agreed a pause - often referred to as a moratorium - on commercial whaling from the 1985/1986 season.
Japan agreed to the moratorium, but has used the scientific whaling exemption to continue.
When is whaling legal?Objection: A country formally objects to the International Whaling Commission moratorium, declaring itself exempt. Example: Norway
Scientific: A nation issues unilateral "scientific permits"; any IWC member can do this. Example: Japan
Indigenous (aka Aboriginal subsistence): IWC grants permits to indigenous groups for subsistence food. Example: Alaskan Inupiat
Guide to the great whales

Pointing to the IWC's remit to regulate rather than eliminate the whaling industry, Japan insists its practices are sustainable and that animal rights concerns are both sentimental and irrelevant.2013 picture showing Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker colliding with the Japanese whaling fleet fuel tanker the San Laurel
Anti-whaling activists have collided with ships involved in the hunts, in an attempt to stop them going ahead
Japan makes no secret of the fact that much of the whale meat produced as a result of what it insists is scientific research, ends up in supermarkets and restaurants.
While sale of by-products from genuine scientific whaling research is permitted, opponents say the scale of the sales dwarfs the amount of useful scientific evidence gathered, which they also insist can be found through non-lethal research.
Whale products are not frequently eaten by most people in Japan, some of whom share others' discomfort with the practice of whaling. But many other Japanese also feel it is an important cultural tradition and object to being pressured to give it up.

A pleasure wherever: Hazard

Eden Hazard produced his best performance of the season at Tottenham according to Jose Mourinho, and like his manager the attacker felt we deserved more from our trip to north London yesterday.
Hazard started in attack at White Hart Lane and had our best two chances of a hard-fought derby, one in each half. The first he headed off target and the second was well saved, two of the reasons why he says we could have picked up all three points.
‘A draw is a good result but I think we deserved to score a goal to cap off a good performance,’ reviewed the Belgian of our first goalless draw in the league this season.
‘In the first half Oscar gave a great cross to me which I headed over. We didn’t have a lot of chances but Hugo Lloris stopped a volley from me which was a beautiful save. If I had scored then it would have been 1-0 and it could have been a win for us.
‘It’s always difficult to play at Tottenham. Last season we lost here 5-3 and we tried to get revenge but I think a draw is a good result.’
Hazard linked up effectively with the three attacking midfield players – Willian, Oscar and Pedro – deployed behind him, and the Belgian explained why he relished his afternoon leading the Chelsea attack.
‘There was a lot of movement with small passes between us. It was not always easy but we did a good job and tried to score. We enjoyed playing together.
‘I have played on the left, on the right, recently in the number 10 role, and I just enjoy playing. I know to give my all wherever I am on the pitch.’
It is now three games unbeaten and three clean sheets in a row, too, something that bodes well for the busy December coming up. Hazard outlined his aspirations for the rest of the season.
‘We try to take game after game and win game after game,’ he said. ‘We won against Norwich, we drew here and we play a good game at home next week which we have to win.
‘We want to finish in the top four and we know it’s difficult but we will try. We will continue to work hard and continue to take pleasure from our game.’
