Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Friday ended his run for president in the 2016 election. Chafee, who entered the race in June, is the second democrat to drop out of the race this week.
“As you know, I have been campaigning on a platform of Prosperity Through Peace,” Chafee told the crowd at the DNC’s annual Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington. “But after much thought I have decided to end my campaign for president today. I would like to take this opportunity one last time to advocate for a chance be given to peace.”
Chafee’s decision follows a lackluster performance both in the
polls and at the first democratic primary debate in Las Vegas on Oct.
14. He only spoke for nine minutes, and faltered when host Anderson
Cooper pressed him about his vote to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act in
1999.
Real Clear Politics indicated Chafee was polling at less than 1% on Oct. 23. Forbes estimated that he only raised $400,000 as of Sept. 29.
